AROUND THE TOWN: Oh, those Southern women

A friend of mine has often said that women in the South believe they can say anything they want to about anyone as long as they say, "Bless their hearts" afterward. The first time I heard her say that, I didn't think much about it. Later, I started noticing how true that seems to be even for this writer. Here are a few things I heard just recently:"That Johnny can't seem to stay away from the women...bless his heart.""She is the messiest housekeeper I've ever seen...bless her heart." Or"She is so unorganized she would mess up a one-car funeral....bless her heart."I was thinking about that when I got this e-mail from a friend about Southerners in general. I find it very funny and hope you do as well. I am not sure who wrote the original piece or I would give them some credit for it!Southern WomenSouthern women appreciate their natural assets: clean skina waning smilethat unforgettable southern drawlSouthern women know their manners:"Yes ma'am.""Yes, sir!""Why, no, Billy!"Southern women have a distinct way with fond expressions:"Y'all come back!""Well, bless your heart.""Drop by when you can.""How's your momma?"Southern women know their summer weather report:HumidityHumidityHumiditySouthern women know their vacation spots:The beachThe rivuhThe crickSouthern women know the joys of June, July and August:Colorful hi-heel sandalsStrapless sun dressesIced sweet tea with mintSouthern women know everybody's first name:HoneyDarlin'ShugahSouthern women know the movies that speak to their hearts:Fried Green TomatoesDriving Miss DaisySteel MagnoliasGone with the WindSouthern women know their religions:BaptistMethodistFootballSouthern women know their country breakfasts:Red-eye gravyGritsEggsCountry hamMouth-watering homemade biscuits with momma's homemade jellySouthern women know their cities dripping with southern charm:Chawl'stnS'vanahFoat WuthN'awlinsAddlannaSouthern women know their elegant gentlemen:Men in uniformMen in tuxedoesRhett ButlerSouthern girls know their prime real-estate:The mallThe country clubThe beauty salonSouthern girls know the three deadly sins:Having bad hair and nailsHaving bad mannersCooking bad foodMore southern-isms:Only a southerner knows the difference between a hissie fit and a conniption fit, and that you don't "have" them, you "pitch" them.Only a southerner knows how many fish, collard greens, turnip greens, peas, beans, etc., make up a "mess."Only a southerner can show or point out to you the general direction of "yonder."Only a southerner knows exactly how long "directly" is, as in: Going to town, be back directly."Even southern babies know that "gimme some sugar" is not a request for the white, granular sweet substance that sits in a pretty little bowl in the middle of the table. All southerners know exactly when "by and by" is.

'Born Standing Up' by Steve Martin

THERE is a YouTube video, shot at a Lincoln Center tribute to Diane Keaton earlier this year, in which Steve Martin comes onstage with his banjo and plays a sweet, twangy melody called "Father's Pride." The music is winsome and his execution heartfelt. After a few seconds, a rumble of laughter rolls up from the crowd. Then it dies. The audience can't seem to resolve the humorous visual cue of the banjo-wielding Martin with the sincerity of his song.

Martin's memoir, "Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life," will similarly confuse those who come to it looking for laughs. It is a mostly unfunny yet oddly stirring book about the comedian's early life, beginning with his boyhood before moving through his 20s and on up to 1982, when he hung up his balloon hat and quit doing stand-up for good.

'House’ Wins Night; ‘Cane’ Halts Descent

You know that scene in action movies where the hero is trapped in a flooding room, the water has risen to his head, he's up against the ceiling and straining to breathe inside that last couple inches of air?

That's CBS' “Cane," which last night managed to stop the compartment from flooding after five consecutive weeks of ratings drops.

The show has a 2.0 preliminary Nielsen rating among adults 18 to 49, matching last week. Had the numbers sunk further, the rating would have gone from unacceptable-during-any-season-except-this-one to unacceptable-even-with-a-pending-writers-strike. CBS plans to wait another week to see if “Cane" can start bailing out and give itself some breathing room.

Otherwise, Fox won the night with “Bones" (3.2 and on par) and “House" (7.0, down 8 percent from last week).

Trip To Barber, Beauty Shop Could Save Life

A trip to the barber shop or beauty salon could now save your life.

Five D.C. barber and beauty shops have installed blood pressure machines and digital scales for their customers to use. It's part of a program underwritten by two insurance companies the MedStar Research Institute to fight coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death among black Americans.

The Hair Heart and Health program is modeled after one in Baltimore coordinated by the University of Maryland's Department of Medicine. Stylists learn how to screen clients for obesity and high blood pressure and when to urge them to follow up with a doctor. .

Ostrander takes up familiar role against Irish

When Notre Dame visited Stanford Stadium two seasons ago, Cardinal quarterback T.C. Ostrander was in the same role he'll be in today against the Irish: a backup. But that didn't prevent Ostrander from almost engineering a stunning comeback.

It was Ostrander who replaced an injured Trent Edwards in the second half and led Stanford to a go-ahead touchdown with 1:46 left - only to see the Irish pull it out.

So much has changed since then. Notre Dame (2-9) has gone from BCS contender to national punchline, Stanford Stadium has undergone a makeover and Jim Harbaugh - not Walt Harris - is calling the shots for the Cardinal.

But Ostrander's role is the same, although that wasn't his intention. The fifth-year senior lost his starting job when Tavita Pritchard led the Cardinal to one of college football's all-time upsets, 24-23 over USC.
