How to select living, flowering plants to decorate through the holiday season
Q. I like to decorate with living, flowering plants during the holiday season. However, many times the flowers do not last from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Are there any flowering plants that will keep their flowers until even New Year's Day? Mattie K. Las Cruces A. Choice of plants is important, as you have suggested. Some plants, such as the Christmas cactus, may bloom through the season if there are enough buds on the plant. Plants such as these have flowers that last only a few days to a week under typical home conditions. New flowers must open in succession to maintain flowering. However, we often choose plants that naturally flower in one brilliant display. Such plants will maintain their flowers longer if they receive appropriate environmental conditions.

Barkan, the renowned owner of a Tel Aviv modeling agency, has spent the last few years bringing the problem of eating disorders in the modeling community to light. While international demand for Israeli models has increased, so too has his awareness of anorexia among young girls in Israel and around the world. Just a few months ago he rushed 33-year-old Israeli model Hila Elmalich, who was suffering from anorexia, to hospital after he found her collapsed unconscious on the floor of her home. Paris Hilton judges Tokyo beauty contest
American socialite Paris Hilton may not be ready for her planned charity work in Rwanda, but she was up for judging a beauty contest in Tokyo on Tuesday. Hilton and her younger sister, Nicky, each chose one finalist for the Miss Universe Japan contest. A dozen or so more will be selected next month. "I love Tokyo," Hilton said. "The shopping is great." Hilton has promised to try improving her bad-girl image since she finished a jail term this June for violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. She had announced plans to do charity work in Rwanda this month for the Playing for Good Foundation, but later decided to postpone the trip. Her appearance at a Tokyo fashion boutique to judge the contest packed the room with photographers and TV cameras.
