FIRST-PERSON (Phil Boatwright): Thanksgiving movie stuffing

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (BP)--Thanksgiving brings us a cornucopia of films aimed to occupy the time of bored kids out of school and parents who don't know how to fill vacation time. Here's what you can look forward to.

-- "Enchanted" (Rated PG for some scary images and mild innuendo). This newest release from Disney Studios puts a delightful spin on the happily-ever-after story, with the mean old queen casting the lovely princess into a portal that takes her to a decidedly non-fairytale world - New York City. There she learns that life can be a bit messier than in Cartoonland. But she dispenses some lessons of her own, reminding her new acquaintances of the glories of whistling while you work and true love.

Disney's past glories are constantly being saluted with cameos and tips-of-the-hat, such as the appearances of Jodi Benson, the voice of "The Little Mermaid," appearing as the character Robert's assistant, Sam; and Paige O'Hara -- Belle of "Beauty and the Beast" - portraying an actress on a soap opera.

Burton Down the Rabbit Hole With Disney

Tim Burton is going back to where it all began.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, the director of contemporary macabre has signed a new two-picture deal with the Walt Disney Company, the studio that launched his career, that will see him helm a pair of 3-D movies--a big-screen version of Lewis Carroll's classic novel, Alice in Wonderland, and a remake of his own famous short, Frankenweenie.

"They have 'instant classic' written all over them and will certainly entertain audiences worldwide for years to come," Disney chairman Dick Cook told the trade. "Tim is one of the most dynamic and creative storytellers of our time, and having him back at Disney is just great."

Burton will get to work on Alice first. Taking a page from Robert Zemeckis' Beowulf, the film will combine live-action with state-of-the-art performance capture and be released in Disney digital 3-D.

Carroll's tale is being adapted by Linda Woolverton, the scribe whose credits include the Mouse House mega-hit 'toons The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

The project will be produced by former Disney and Revolution Studios chairman Joe Roth with Jennifer and Suzanne Todd and Richard Zanuck, the veteran producer who previously collaborated with the filmmaker on 2001's Planet of the Apes, 2003's Big Fish, 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the upcoming Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, arriving in theaters Dec.

Disney favorite stops at Kelsey

"Disney's Beauty and the Beast," yet another stage musical based on an already popular movie, garnered several Tony Award nominations in 1994, but lost out across the board to the more sophisticated Stephen Sondheim drama "Passion." Yet all across America, tours of the Broadway production were eagerly attended, and community theaters hankered for the day when they could stage the extravagant fairy tale. Now, Playful Theatre Productions brings the fractured fairy tale to the Kelsey Theater stage with a vibrant cast that keeps the nearly three-hour show consistently exciting.

With a book by Linda Woolverton, music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman ("The Little Mermaid" and "Little Shop of Horrors" team) plus Andrew Lloyd Webber's former partner, Tim Rice, "Beauty and the Beast" offers something for everyone.

Disney musical brings out beast (and beauty) in actors

Under normal circumstances, says Jay Giberson of West Long Branch, he's a pretty mild-mannered guy. But on Nov. 30, he'll be a beast.

The 24-year-old plays the Beast in Marlboro Players' production of "Beauty and the Beast," running through Dec. 16 at Marlboro Middle School.

"Seeing me (as the Beast) might surprise some of the people I know," said Giberson, who swears he only gets beastly in real life with bad drivers. "People wouldn't expect me to be as ferocious as I probably come off as being."

Giberson is among a cast of more than 25 who will put on the $50,000 production, written by Linda Woolverton with music by Alan Menken. Lindsay Wood of New Brunswick plays Belle, the Beast's love interest.

Director Mark Ilardi said producing the classic love-conquers-all Disney tale had a hefty price tag attached because of the special effects, including confetti cannons, lasers and pyrotechnics.
