Movie Review | Enchanted: Contemporary fairy tale retains its Disney charm

Once upon a time, animated fairy tales knew their place: a saccharine world of lilting songs, talking animals and guaranteed happy endings. Cynicism was as forbidden as disease.

Shrek then crossed over into our world with its satirical versions of beloved characters, and other animated films followed.

With Enchanted, Walt Disney Pictures -- the studio that created the model 70 years ago -- has joined the rebellion: The musical fantasy lampoons the conventions of Snow White, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast by moving them into live-action New York.

Yet the heart of Enchanted remains in the castles and forests that Walt taught generations to believe in. The fun is poked gently, romance survives ridicule and innocence triumphs fairly intact.

The movie begins in a

'40s-style animated forest, where lovely Giselle (voiced by Amy Adams of Junebug) sings with her animal friends of finding true love.

Movie Review: Enchanted

Enchanted is like a grand, live-wire musical symphony of all the Disney fairy tales we all grew up loving. We know all the ingredients: the beautiful singing princess in the tall tower, the prince in shining armor, the evil stepmother or queen who were probably one and the same to begin with anyway, the comically adorable animal sidekick, and perhaps a little kissing to seal true love. And with its ingenious premise, Disney has found the most ideal place to create its own genre-bending musical comedy — New York City. The movie opens with a brief bit of animation to introduce our heroine, Giselle (Amy Adams) in a musical interlude that walks the tightrope between being the most earnest musical number Disney never made and a hilarious parody exposing the old classics for all the frothy sugar that cynics throw stones at.

Adams' career mirrors Cinderella

LOS ANGELES -- You can tell a lot about a woman from who she chooses as her favourite Disney princess.

Sleeping Beauty? Lazy.

Snow White? Dependent.

And for Amy Adams? "Cinderella," she says. "She had a good work ethic."

There's a lot more to Adams, we're sure, than her choice of cartoon royalty, but the Cinderella pick is fitting, considering her own resolute, slow-burn career climb from unknown to Oscar nominee to full-fledged leading lady.

"She's unbelievably disciplined," says Patrick Dempsey, who co-stars with her in Enchanted, the animated/live-action Disney comedy that's expected to rightfully catapult Adams into the Hollywood stratosphere. It opens in theatres tomorrow, the day before Thanksgiving in the U.S. .
