Gold’s Special Qualities

Gold has functioned as an adornment and store of value for more than 6,000 years. The earliest gold jewelry dates from the Sumerian civilization that flourished around 4,000 BC. Golds intrinsic beauty, warmth, glitter, sensuality and spiritual richness have evoked powerful human emotions throughout history.

Gold plays a vital part as a symbol of love and devotion. It also has significance for occasions like weddings, anniversaries and birthdays, as well as a host of other holidays, ceremonies and customs. Consider, too, the ways in which gold has enriched our language the best years of our lives are known as the golden years; an advantageous situation is referred to as a golden opportunity; a civilizations time of peace, prosperity and creativity is referred to as a golden era.

New costumes take their place among the classics

Some unfamiliar faces may appear at your door Wednesday evening, especially if you don't have young children to help you keep score.

Typical of past years, many trick-or-treaters are taking their cues from Hollywood's big and small screens this year, according to some area stores.

"Most costumes are driven by movie blockbusters," said Tonia Farinha, marketing director for Spirit Halloween stores, whose suburban locations include Addison, St. Charles, Elgin, Schaumburg, Palatine and Waukegan.

"Those are popular across the country."

The Hollywood connection may be obvious in some cases -- like Spider-Man, and Darth Vader and his storm troopers from the "Star Wars" series.

"Star Wars will always be popular," said Sonia Reyes, an employee at Spirit Halloween Superstore in Naperville.

Garden diary: She's still relishing dirt under her nails

I realize that the calendar says we're more than a week into November and nearing the end of the year.

So why am I not quite able to let go of the hands-in-the-dirt, outdoors 'til dusk, plant-tweaking things I like to do? Six months of playing outside ought to be enough, you would think. But here I am, stuck firmly in denial. Why don't I want to acknowledge that the season is over?

My theory centers on the mysterious disappearance of October. True, the month was just about as long as usual -- the same 31 days. But somehow, the month got away from me while I was doing too many useful and useless things. Busy, busy all the while and no time to linger in the sunshine, smelling the last roses.

I blinked at the end of September, and all of a sudden, it was Halloween.
