Storing up Memories In a coal mining town, the company store was an integral part of the life of every family

By Bob Niedbala, Staff writer

In the early days of the company town, a coal miner could have all of his purchases at the company store deducted directly from his pay.

Some miners, as a result, received nothing on payday.

But that wasn't the case in one company town, Mather, where no matter how much a miner billed at the company store, his pay was at least $1.

"A lot of people overdrew. They overbought and couldn't pay their bill, but we had to leave them $1," said Ruth Duke, 81, who as a teen worked at the Mather company store. That was just the way it was.

Many who still live in the small mining towns, or patches, remember the company stores.

Duke and several others recalled when the company drugstore would get ice cream near the Fourth of July.

It's 'Enchanted' all the way

LOS ANGELES - Disney's fairy-tale comedy "Enchanted" swept North American box-office this weekend with collections of $35.3 million. However the films has had the second-biggest Thanksgiving holiday opening with five-day collections of $50 million, according to data released by Nielsen EDI. The five-day collections were second only to Toy Story 2, which was released in 1999 and raked in $80 million in the five-day period. Enchanted is a gentle poke at Disney's own blockbusters like "Snow White," "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty." It tells the story of a princess, who is banished from fairy land and learns the meaning of love in downtown Manhattan. "On a weekend like this, families are really looking hard for something they can go out and see together," said Chuck Viane, the head of distribution at Disney.

The art issue

The Times of Acadiana asked local artists to submit bios and examples of their work for our first-ever Art Issue. We've picked through the entries to compile 50 of Acadiana's most creative.

Art washes away the dust from everyday life.
-- Pablo Picasso

For weeks, the Times of Acadiana has put out the call to area artists -- to those who earn their bread and butter via oils and watercolors and to those who simply consider their craft a vehicle for profitless creativity.

We asked them to include basic biographical information, price range of their work, technique specifics, inspiration and thoughts about recent works. We asked artists to recall that special time when they discovered they had talent in the first place. We asked for samples of their works.

Before posting the first request, we certainly recognized the abundance of talent in Acadiana.

Hearing on golf course

Town officials have scheduled a public hearing next month to give residents a chance to weigh in on the terms of a lease for a golf course on 58 acres of public land off Green Street. The land is now the site of the private Needham Golf Club, whose 10-year lease is up in April 2009, and selectmen have voted unanimously to continue to use the property as a golf course. Critics of the arrangement have said a private club should not be able to restrict residents from using town-owned land. Supporters say the club provides the town with open space, raises property values, and contributes to a high quality of life for the residents. The public hearing is scheduled for Dec. 11 at the Broadmeadow Elementary School. - Laura M. Colarusso

Eating disorders in adolescents

Eating disorders in the U.S. among ethnic groups were thought to be rare, but recent studies have shown that many cultures are now exposed to the thin beauty ideal. As a result, experts expect to see an increase in eating disorder symptoms among ethnic groups. It is also suspected that eating disorders and weight control behaviors may be increasing among adolescent boys. Although research has shown that eating disorders begin during adolescence, few epidemiological studies have been conducted with teens and those that have examined weight control practices among adolescents are too varied to be able to discern trends. .
