Time to put a stop to Bates

There's no defense for how the Broncos allowed arrogance to dissolve into panic during the monumental collapse of a 37-34 overtime loss to the Chicago Bears.

"Being the football team that we hope we are, you've got to put those games away," Denver coach Mike Shanahan said Sunday.

No duh. And no D.

There are five games remaining on the NFL schedule for Denver. As painful as it will be for everyone at Dove Valley to admit, those five games are the final ones Jim Bates should work as assistant head coach in charge of defense.

This is an experiment that simply has not worked. Let's call the whole thing off, before somebody else gets hurt.

Denver lost against hapless Chicago quarterback Rex Grossman and a sorry bunch of bad news Bears, because the visitors broke far too many rules of common sense.

Apple iMac: Still the Desktop Star

Zooming around a sharp corner while playing Electronic Arts' Need for Speed video game on my computer, I spun out of control, hit a guardrail, and sailed over a cliff to my doom. It's an outcome that's all too common now, but one that wasn't even possible until Apple began using zippy Intel (NasdaqGS:INTC - News) processors in its computers, prompting EA (NasdaqGS:ERTS - News) to create versions of its games for the iMac. .

Robbery suspects arrested

Rio Rancho police have made two arrests involving a string of armed robberies in the city.

Urbano Gutierrez, 28, and his girlfriend Samantha Hayden, 23, are being held in the Sandoval County Detention Center. Bond has been set at $500,000 for Gutierrez, and $100,000 for Hayden.

"Both suspects were arrested Wednesday in Albuquerque after police followed their car from Rio Rancho," said John Francis, Public Information Officer of the Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety. "The suspects had their 8-month old son in the car with them when they were arrested."

Gutierrez and Hayden are alleged to have robbed four businesses in Rio Rancho between Oct. 18 and Nov. 4. Hayden told police she was the driver of the getaway car in all the robberies and had her child in the car with them on each occasion.

Seasons screenings

With dreams of Oscar statuettes dancing in their heads, Hollywood studios go all out at the holidays. Between now and the new year, they will release their weightiest offerings, hoping to reap big audiences and big wins at the Academy Awards.

The deluge began earlier this month with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe showing their macho chops in "American Gangster." Powerhouses Robert Redford, Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise followed with "Lions for Lambs" last week.

But this year, folks, it ain’t over until Johnny Depp sings. So settle in to your stadium seating because the holiday movie season has just begun.

Oct. 30 (Bloomberg) -- A strong sultry beauty in a dark gleaming unitard struggles endlessly in her powerful partner's embrace. Or is it a stranglehold?

The forceful episode serves as the centerpiece of choreographer-on-the-rise Benjamin Millepied's new ``From Here On Out'' for American Ballet Theater, performing at New York's City Center this week. The duet's subject seems to be a cruel co-dependency that masquerades as love. Remarkably, the choreography conveys no human feeling, neither depicting nor eliciting empathy.

Body Fat, Red Meat Linked to Cancer

Excess body fat and red meat are linked to an increased risk of common cancers and should be avoided, the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research said.

About 40 percent of all cancers are linked to food, lack of exercise and body weight, the organizations said in a 571-page report. This is the most comprehensive evaluation of evidence linking personal habits to cancer risk, expert panelists said.

The findings are meant to guide future scientific research, cancer prevention education programs and health policy around the world, panelists said. The recommendations could prevent about a third of all cancers if adopted worldwide, said W. Philip T. James, panel member and chairman of the International Obesity Task Force in London.

"Part of the purpose of the report was to show that prevention of cancer by means of food, nutrition and associated factors is as feasible and crucial as prevention of coronary heart disease," researchers said.
