Historic Delta Queen's Future In Doubt

LITTLE ROCK -- The uniqueness that has made the 81-year-old Delta Queen a tourist attraction on various rivers, including the Arkansas, could leave those river travelers and the cities they visit high and dry."It would be a shame if the Delta Queen is retired," said Lee Powell, executive director of the Mississippi Delta Grassroots Caucus."The Delta Queen has a substantial economic impact on Delta towns where it stops," said Rex Nelson, co-chairman of the Delta Regional Authority.Earlier this year, U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., cited safety reasons when he refused to exempt the steam-powered paddleboat for a 10th time from 1966 legislation known as the Safety of Life at Sea Act.The act prohibits wooden boats from carrying more than 50 overnight passengers. The Delta Queen carries up to 174.In response to the decision by the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, 1st District Rep.

13 years after a breakup, he'd like to send an apology

Dear Annie: In 1994, my first real relationship ended when "Lisa" and I parted ways. For reasons that are still valid, I broke it off. It was emotional and very tough on her. After that, I met the woman who became my wife, and we've been married eight years.

Here is the issue: I have been thinking and dreaming a lot about Lisa. I don't know why she still takes up such a large portion of my head 13 years later. I have not spoken to her or seen her since a month after our breakup, but I still care about her. I guess I really want to know she is happy and healthy. I also want to apologize for the way I ended things. I think she was treated unfairly by my circle of friends.

I suspect my wife would be less than enthusiastic about my initiating contact with an old flame, even though my intentions are strictly platonic.

Let the holiday movie season begin!

With the start of the holiday season, Hollywood stops holding back. Between now and year's end, studios will be unwrapping their biggest and weightiest Academy Award contenders — the movies that they hope will not only lure you away from the mall and into a theater, but that will also bring in a few Oscar statuettes to add to their cachet and prestige.

Here is a list of some of the movies due for release between now and December. All dates are subject to change.

WEDNESDAY

"August Rush": With the aid of a mysterious stranger (Robin Williams), a musical prodigy (Freddie Highmore) seeks out the parents (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Keri Russell) who abandoned him at birth.

"Enchanted": This family-friendly fantasy answers the long-burning question: What would happen if one of Walt Disney's animated sing-song princess-heroines (think Sleeping Beauty or Snow White) was suddenly plopped into modern-day, flesh-and-blood, steel-and-concrete New York City?

"Hitman": Timothy Olyphant is a hired killer who goes by the name 47 — and has it tattooed on his neck, apparently so he won't forget it.

Uganda: They Are Ready for CHOGM

For some, it is a trend, others an era and a certain event they have heard about in passing. In fact for 15-year-old Robert who has been a house help in Kampala for two years, Chogm must be some big sports event, a motor rally or football match, to which a certain Queen is coming. Regardless of how Ugandans have perceived the forthcoming meeting, one thing is certain to everyone; the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) is no usual occurrence.

The public is as anxious as the government to see the event come to pass for different reasons depending on how they understand it. Everyone recognises Chogm; whether it is by spending time arguing about its benefits to this nation, complaining about it just being an inconvenience or appreciating the fact that Uganda is proud to host the event, we have all recognised the upcoming event.

Opposition coalition could reverse SNP budget for university funding

LABOUR is threatening to join with the Liberal Democrats and Scottish Conservatives in an attempt to win more funding for Scotland's universities.

There was anger and concern last week among university principals when higher education received only half the money it asked for in the SNP's first budget.

Pride after prejudice

SHILPA Shetty is ensconced in the most blinging hotel lobby I've ever seen in my life. I need a pair of dark glasses just to sit here as the light bounces off shimmering chandeliers, glittering gilt-and-ormolu encrusted furniture, and, of course, the Bollywood star's dazzling beauty.

Such shiny white teeth; such dark, flashing eyes; such thick, glossy hair rippling like chocolate-coloured silk around her honey-coloured complexion, not to mention the stunning figure, known as "the hottest body in Bollywood".
