Students ready for ‘Beauty and the Beast’

GERONIMO It isnt easy for Justin Tristan to be a beast.

It takes about 15 or 20 minutes to get dressed, depending on how much help I get, said Tristan, peering out from the fur locks that decorate his headdress.

The true transformation for Tristan, a seemingly mild-mannered Navarro High School junior, is less about a monstrous costume than it is about the quick temper and surly demeanor that emerge when he takes the stage in the male lead of Beauty and the Beast.

Its definitely interesting and the costume is uncomfortable, but Im used to playing unusual characters, said Tristan, who also played the earthworm in James and the Giant Peach. When I heard we were thinking of doing a Disney play, I was just so excited.

Theater teacher Laura Haygood said Beauty and the Beast is one of the more challenging productions that the theater department has put on.

Disney makes fun of itself

Surely this was inevitable.

After years of watching the monstrously successful "Shrek" franchise parody everything beloved about those classic animated Disney movies, Disney is showing a sense of humor and making fun of itself.

"Enchanted" has a song in its heart and a tongue in its cheek - both in animated and live-action forms - with an infectious energy that helps overcome the script's contrivances.

Wide-eyed, would-be princess Giselle (the irresistible Amy Adams) is banished by the wicked Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) from her idyllic cartoon playland to the harsh reality of Times Square before she can marry her one true love, Prince Edward (James Marsden). (Though truly, Times Square was Disneyfied a long time ago, so in theory, it shouldn't have been that much of a shock.)

Back in the magical land of Andalasia, Giselle could just call out the window of her cozy home, sing a lilting song, and all the friendly forest creatures would come scurrying to her side to help with whatever chore she needed - clean the house, sew a dress - or just hang out and look furry and cute.

Every School Every Thursday -- Des Moines South

There is no school Friday due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Classes will resume Monday.

South Des Moines - Elementaries

Howe

Nicole Smith's second-grade class sure is learning a lot this year, from reading chapter books to learning how to regroup numbers. Their brains are getting bigger every day. Some of the students feel as though they are ready for third grade.

Jackson

Xeuay Lothi-Baccam's third-graders wanted to do something nice for the school and are purchasing a book for the library. The students love reading books, and reading is very important to them. As a class, they collected $13.90 which was enough to buy two books, "Merry Christmas: A Storybook Collection" and "A Kiss Goodbye" by Audrey Penn.

Girl dies in ATV accident

The Jackson County community has lost two of its youngest members in traffic crashes over the past few days, the latest taking the life of a 12-year-old Sneads girl.

Jamie Messer died Sunday from the injuries she received in an ATV accident just over the county line in Calhoun County Saturday afternoon.

According to Florida Highway Patrol reports, Messer was a passenger on a 2007 Honda ATV being driven by 15-year-old Jeremy Leigh.

According to reports, the ATV was eastbound on County Road 286 when Leigh slowed suddenly for a slower-moving ATV, lost control and applied the brake.

Her ATV flipped over, ejecting Leigh and Messer.

Leigh, also of Sneads, was listed as having sustained serious injuries.

Students at Grand Ridge Middle School on Monday filled a wall in their school with pictures and other remembrances of their fallen seventh-grade schoolmate.
