"Disney's Beauty and the Beast," yet another stage musical based on an already popular movie, garnered several Tony Award nominations in 1994, but lost out across the board to the more sophisticated Stephen Sondheim drama "Passion." Yet all across America, tours of the Broadway production were eagerly attended, and community theaters hankered for the day when they could stage the extravagant fairy tale. Now, Playful Theatre Productions brings the fractured fairy tale to the Kelsey Theater stage with a vibrant cast that keeps the nearly three-hour show consistently exciting. With a book by Linda Woolverton, music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman ("The Little Mermaid" and "Little Shop of Horrors" team) plus Andrew Lloyd Webber's former partner, Tim Rice, "Beauty and the Beast" offers something for everyone.
Millville parade kicks off holiday season
MILLVILLE -- Leah Shaw, 4, stood along High Street Friday night anxiously waiting for the city's annual Christmas parade to begin. As the police mobile command unit made its way down the street, horn honking and lights flashing, the little girl started edging closer to the curb, yelling "honk" while moving her small arm up and down. Shaw did the same thing to the firetrucks that followed, and the firefighters happily did so. Prior to the start of the parade, Shaw's aunt, Sherri Holmes, of Voorhees, said she was excited to see what the parade had to offer. She said she was also looking forward to seeing how both her nieces, Brooke and Leah, and her sister did in the Jolly Holly Run. "I don't get down here often, so this is just a chance to get down here and enjoy the festivities," Holmes said of Millville, adding she was raised in the city.

Salonga, a man of faith: Eloquent, lyrical, compelling
MANILA, PhilippinesYou will be grabbed by a deep sense of nostalgia for a heroic leader when you read this book, Not by Power or Wealth Alone, written by one who lives this article of faith till now. Carefully note the present tense, because the writer has lived to be over 80 living audaciously to make a difference, one more time, in the life of a nation still sadly divided by many issues. Enchanted Disney Spoofs: Past Princesses, Familiar Restaurants, Cleaning Cockroaches
Six years after Shrek put a modern spin on the classic fairy tale with some not-so-veiled references to Disney animation, the Mouse House has once again found itself in the crosshairs. This time it's the target of Enchanted, a movie that isn't afraid to have fun with some of old Walt's more famous characters. The difference this time? Enchanted was made by Disney. "At the beginning, I wasn't sure they knew they were poking fun at themselves, but I think they actually did. You have to hand it to Disney for making fun of some of their iconic moments," Enchanted actress Susan Sarandon told MTV News. "They are scattered throughout." Instead of a spoof, we should call it a "playful homage," director Kevin Lima insisted a delicate tonal-tightrope walk between making fun and honoring. Indeed, the story of Enchanted itself is anything but ironic, a perfectly straightforward fairy tale that just happens to take place in the real world and not some animated kingdom.

Sitting in Chattanooga, they were frustrated.
