Organic Root Stimulator(R) and Jet Magazine All Set to Launch Fall National Barbershop Tour

Decisions are made, jobs are found and political issues are debated at one place and one place only: The neighborhood barbershop. It's the place where boys undergo a singular rite of passage to manhood, where jokes are told that can be shared nowhere else and where men openly share among one another the nuances of their lives.

TV Q&A with Rob Owen

This week's TV Q&A responds to questions about the new fall season, FiOS TV and DVRs. As always, thanks for reading, and keep those questions coming.

-- Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV editor

• Q: My favorite new shows this season are "The Big Bang Theory," "Chuck" and "Reaper" (obviously, I'm more of a geek than I thought). What do you think of them and do you think they'll be renewed? I know "Reaper" wasn't doing great in the ratings.

-- Margie, Pittsburgh

• Q: So with the new TV season a couple weeks old, which new shows are you enjoying and which are you waiting to just go away? My two new favorites are "Chuck" and "Reaper," and I have to admit I do enjoy "Cavemen" (I think I'm the only one). "Aliens in America" started out good, but seems to be sliding back.

Lowrider culture gets high profile / L.A. museum's exhibition looks at cars' beauty and significance

Lowriders are riding high. For instance, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles recently opened an exhibition titled "La Vida Lowrider: Cruising the City of Angels." It includes 21 cars, several bicycles, pedal cars, scale models, photographs and other images from the lowrider culture of Los Angeles.

This is not the museum's first exploration of the subject. In 2000, it held a show called "Arte y Estilo: The Lowriding Tradition."

"We always thought about revisiting the subject," said Denise M. Sandoval, the guest curator for both shows and an assistant professor of Latino studies at Cal State Northridge. "We wanted to tell a cohesive story. This show is a way to teach kids the early history of L.A.," or at least the mid-20th century part of it.

The new show, which runs through June 8, emphasizes the social side of lowriding in Los Angeles.

The world's star bars

Of all the gin joints in all the world, picking the very best is fraught with danger. You can recommend a bar where you had a whale of a night and send along friends who will report back that they didn’t know what all the fuss was about, or that it was full of poseurs, or the drinks were watered or the bellinis premixed. However, some bars are so rich in history, so iconic, it is almost impossible to have a bad time, because you are making a pilgrimage of sorts, albeit one where you can order a fine drink at the end (not always a feature of the original pilgrimages). Here are a dozen of our favourites, not the latest flash-in-the-pan watering holes, but ones that will still be here when your grandchildren are asking: "Grandpa, what was a Boujis?"

HOTEL NACIONAL, Havana

You get serious cocktail action in Havana, and it is de rigueur to follow the Hemingway mantra: "My mojito in the Bodeguita del Medio and my daiquiri in the Floridita." But where do you take your cuba libre? At the Vista al Golfo bar (gulf view bar) of the vast (and vastly improved) Hotel Nacional de Cuba, where you are likely to see the likes of Naomi or Kate and Ralph Fiennes or Robert Redford (Fidel actually came to visit him at the Nacional).

AROUND THE TOWN: Oh, those Southern women

A friend of mine has often said that women in the South believe they can say anything they want to about anyone as long as they say, "Bless their hearts" afterward. The first time I heard her say that, I didn't think much about it. Later, I started noticing how true that seems to be even for this writer. Here are a few things I heard just recently:"That Johnny can't seem to stay away from the women...bless his heart.""She is the messiest housekeeper I've ever seen...bless her heart." Or"She is so unorganized she would mess up a one-car funeral....bless her heart."I was thinking about that when I got this e-mail from a friend about Southerners in general. I find it very funny and hope you do as well. Witness: Brother shot from passing SUV

KALAMAZOO -- It was several seconds after a single shot was fired out of a passing Chevrolet Suburban that Isaiah Berry realized his little brother had been hit.

The two brothers and several friends were on the front porch of a neighbor's house at 1217 Mills Street in Kalamazoo the evening of March 29 when the black-and-silver Suburban turned off Washington Avenue onto their street, Berry testified in a Kalamazoo courtroom Wednesday.

``We were just talking. They just shot and kept going. He got shot in the head and died,'' Isaiah Berry said during the first day of testimony in the trial for Emmanuel Atkins, 19, of Kalamazoo, charged with murdering 14-year-old William Berry.

``We didn't really know he was shot until I pulled him over. ... He was bleeding real bad.''

Berry and three others who were at the shooting scene testified Wednesday that they recognized the Suburban from a nearby altercation earlier in the evening during which they almost got into a fight with the vehicle's occupants.

"Italian Lover" a happy reunion

I've been waiting a long time for "The Italian Lover," and, believe me, it's about time Robert Hellenga got around to writing it.

It has been 12 years since the novel "The Sixteen Pleasures" kept me up on a two-day reading binge as I obsessed over the story of American abroad Margot Harrington and the centuries-old book of erotic drawings she uncovered in a convent.

Hellenga's pages transported me to Florence in 1966 when the river Arno burst its dams and wreaked havoc on a city famed for its Renaissance treasures. Margot was among the "mud angels" — bookish young people who overran the city in the hopes of rescuing rare manuscripts and art work.

In my messianic zeal to share the delights of the book, I performed dozens of rescue efforts all my own. Everywhere I spotted dog-eared copies of "The Sixteen Pleasures," I snapped them up, only to press them upon friends, neighbors and dismayed fellow bus-riders.
