DARIUS THE GREAT: In The Shadows of Cinematography with Darius Khondji

He is one of the great names in his profession and yet virtually unknown to the audience at large for he works in the shadows of the film directors and the actors on a movie set. His job is Cinematography, which basically consists of defining what the movie will ultimately look like onscreen: The lights, the type of film and lens to be used up to overseeing the photography are all part of his job. Darius Khondji has remarkably imposed his unique style in both French and Hollywood Films for the past two decades becoming one of the most envied and demanded talents in an already highly competitive industry. Just to name a few of his achievements: Marc Caro and Jean Pierre Jeunet's Delicatessen and City of Lost Children , David Fincher's Se7en, Alan Parker's Evita should be enough to introduce him but would certainly not be complete without Roman Polanski's Ninth Gate, Bernardo Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty, Danny Boyle's The Beach, Sydney Pollack's The Interpreter and once again back to his collaboration with Jean Pierre Jeunet with Alien: Resurrection (deemed by many critics as the Only good follow-up to Ridley Scott's original classic).

Thinking of the Future

ELIZABETH - Dick and Joan Harmet of rural Elizabeth said they wanted to place their land in a conservation easement to preserve its natural beauty and wildlife for future generations."We just feel the necessity to keep the land intact and not broken up into pieces," Dick Harmet said. "It's important for the wildlife in the area and also for the scenic nature of Jo Daviess County."The Harmets recently entered into an agreement with the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation to place 87 acres of their land into a conservation easement. The easement placed on the property will ensure that the land will be preserved in its current state and not developed or subdivided. The buildings on the property - including a restored pre-Civil War log cabin - will be maintained as historical markers for the area and are also protected under the easement.Foundation Executive Director Chris Larson said the property includes native remnant hill prairies, natural savanna, and woodland areas.

The new rules for defeating cancer

Being even slightly overweight can increase the risk of a range of common cancers including breast, bowel and pancreatic cancer, a landmark study has found.

The largest review of links between diet and cancer, incorporating more than 7,000 studies, concludes that there is convincing evidence that excess body fat can cause at least six different types of the disease. The researchers give warning that everyone should be at the lower end of the healthy weight range.

Their recommendations include avoiding processed meats such as ham, bacon, salami or any other meat preserved by smoking, curing or salting; only consuming small amounts of red meat; moderate consumption of alcohol; and avoiding junk food and sweet drinks.

Professor Sir Michael Marmot, who chaired the expert panel assembled by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) to review evidence on the dietary causes of cancer, said he had been shocked to find that weight was so important.

'More' of Shannon may be too much

Molly Shannon is beside herself. The ''Saturday Night Live'' comedienne stars in the 2007 cable comedy ''More of Me'' (Lifetime at 9) as a harried mother, wife and career woman who turns to her inner voices and gets a little more than she bargained for.

''More'' begins with Alice (Shannon) in crisis. She's too busy to celebrate her 10th anniversary with her doting husband (Steven Weber); she wants to devote her full energies to her protest march to save a beloved tree from a bridge construction project, but her fussy daughter and not-quite-toilet-trained son keep her too busy.

Alice ''cracks up'' soon after her son vomits all over her work outfit, making her late for the tree protest. She finds herself divided into three separate versions of her personality (all played by Shannon) -- a cutthroat professional, a craft-obsessed perfect mom and a sex-crazed housewife.

Kingston City's good, mon

As the days grow shorter and the lure of the backyard grill wanes, a jaunt in a heated car to find some good food begins to make sense.

Kingston City in Germantown is one of those journeys.

For five years, owner Devon Campbell and chef Sophie Campbell have been dishing up the flavors of their Jamaican hometown, Kingston.

The storefront is no-frills, but the food more than makes up for the lack of decor. After all, this is take-out. But while you are waiting for your order, peruse the store shelves to pick up a jar of Pickapeppa Sauce or Jamaican Curry Powder.

Show an interest in the curry and Chef Campbell will instruct you on its use. Pass that test and she'll sell you a small plastic bag of the curry she brings from Jamaica.

A small portion should be added to the jarred product for a fuller flavor.
