Church row evolves over fossil boy
Turkana Boy, considered the most complete early human fossil, is being removed from his bomb-proof vault to take centre stage at an exhibition that curators say will provide the most complete record of the evolution of Man. However, the collection, to be show-cased for the first time at the Nairobi National Museum after a £5 million renovation financed by the European Union, has drawn sharp criticism from evangelical Christians who deny the theory of evolution. They, in turn, are being opposed vociferously by scientists eager to study the specimens and to explore the role of Kenya as the cradle of humankind. Bishop Boniface Adoyo, the head of the 35 Kenyan evangelical denominations, is leading opposition to the exhibition. "I do not dispute that as humans we have a history, but my family most certainly did not descend from the apes," he said.
Call it Noho
Amid the cheong sams and mu'umu'u of Chinatown, you now can find clothes from Belgian designers Raf Simon and Dries van Noten two of the labels that MixMix carries. Running the new boutique is Maria Garrido Gabaldn, who has an eye for clean, contemporary lines. From Spain, she was at fashion school in Italy where she made a Japanese friend, who in turn introduced her to MixMix owner Fumihiro Nakamura. The retailer and designer hired her to open his white-box boutique, which reeks with chic, down to the reproduction Mies van der Rohe furniture. On the racks is men's and women's wear from Vogue names such as Kris van Assche (he's also Dior's artistic director), Rick Owens and Veronique Branquinho. Accessories come in the form of Cula bags from Japan (only 100 of each model are made) and Brazilian Herchcovitch, or Alexandre plastic sandals.
Sustainable palm oil system soon
IT will be interesting to gauge global players' acceptance of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil's (RSPO) certified sustainability palm oil (CSPO) system, to be launched in the first quarter 2008. The first ever-certified system for palm oil in the world is set to assure consumers that the products purchased come from environmentally friendly, socially responsible sources and suppliers. Some quarters, however, have doubts on CSPO given a decade-long criticism from various groups, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from developed consuming nations like the United States and Europe. .
Drought taught state some lessons but not all being heeded
Summit County, CO Colorado COLORADO SPRINGS The lessons of the drought that shepherded in the 21st century in Colorado are many, but only some have been heeded. Thats the conclusion of a variety of experts asked about the states response to the deepest drought in modern Colorado history. The drought, which lasted roughly from 2000 to 2005, drained reservoirs, fed the states largest wildfire, stoked a devastating forest beetle infestation and wilted farms. For many Coloradans, it was their first true experience with what it means to live in a semiarid climate. For Front Range water providers, it was a stunning wake-up call that their water supplies were stretched perilously thin. As the sense of crisis ran high, the state, lawmakers and water providers began a series of studies and discussions.
