With the release of his 5th cd as a leader, Alberto Pinton continues to follow his heart and write the music he hears. Either blowing on his baritone saxophone or the assorted woodwinds he usually brings to a gig (ranging from piccolo flute to contrabass clarinet), Alberto Pinton is a hard working improvisor concerned with the delivery of energy and the appreciation of form and beauty. His main forum for composition and improvisation is currently the Alberto Pinton Quintet, with performances and tours in Sweden, Norway and Canada.Alberto Pinton was born in the polluted flatlands of Porto Marghera (Venice), Italy. After childhood lessons on piano and guitar, he starts to play the alto saxophone in 1982, studying privately with multi-instrumentalist Renato Geremia. He moves to live in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1985.In 1988, Alberto moves to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music on a full-time scholarship, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Saxophone Performance, Summa Cum Laude, in 1990.

J.LEAGUE: The Nabisco Cup? Better than nothing
Winning the Nabisco Cup is a little like taking the title of Miss Photogenic at a beauty pageant. It's a consolation prize the victor may temporarily go gaga over, but one the rest of the world will struggle to recall who won in a week's time. Not that it matters to this year's finalists, Gamba Osaka and Kawasaki Frontale, both of whom have failed to meet loftier preseason goals and as a result will now gladly settle for the fourth-most sought after trophy in Japanese soccer behind the Asian Champions League, J.League and Emperor's Cup titles. Big deal or not, Saturday's final at Tokyo's National Stadium promises to be a barn burner as the teams both have reputations for playing free-flowing, attack-minded football. Gamba currently lead the J.League in goals scored with 65, while Frontale--last year's top marksmen--follow with 58.

A Magical, Musical Story
When the New York City Ballet's production of "George Balanchine's 'The Nutcracker' " opens today, the dancing onstage will offer fairy-tale delight. But what is equally important � and often overlooked � is what's going on in the orchestra pit. Tchaikovsky's music for "The Nutcracker" is both overplayed and underappreciated. The composer extracted eight numbers from the score and incorporated them into "The Nutcracker Suite"; the most famous of those portions are often abusively employed in television commercials, movies, and, worse yet, cell phone ringtones. As a result, it is not unusual for the well-exposed ear to perceive this music as juvenile, even trite. But listening to the complete score can counter that. The annual return of the ballet is an occasion to give its magnificent orchestral work fresh attention.
