Disney gets back to classics with dazzling 'Enchanted'

"Enchanted" is the best Disney fantasy-musical since "Mary Poppins," a hilarious, dazzling sendup of the thing that made Disney what it is today — fairy-tale princesses.

It features a delightful, wide-eyed comic performance by Amy Adams of "Junebug" and another singing-dancing, scene-stealing turn by James Marsden ("Hairspray"). This blend of animation in the classic Disney (hand-drawn) style and modern romance has wit and charm to burn.

We begin as we always do, "once upon a time," in an animated fairy-tale land called Andalasia. That's where Giselle, equal parts Snow White, Cinderella, Belle and Ariel, sings her heart out waiting for her "True Love's Kiss." Her singing is so sweet that the critters of the forest come at her call, helping around the house.

And so does the handsome Prince Edward.

Seven homes on Tybee tour

A charming beach house nicknamed "Luscious Little Cottage" will be one of seven homes included on the upcoming Tybee Island Tour of Homes sponsored by Trinity United Methodist Church.

The little cottage on North Lovell Avenue was built during the 1920s for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staffers who were building the Tybee road. A few years ago, the home was rescued by interior designer Jane Coslick, who is well-known for transforming bland houses into happy homes filled with delightful décor and one-of-a-kind details. An old ticket booth - called "The Roost" - sits in the backyard for an added sleeping room. The beds in the roost were made from driftwood found on Tybee's beaches.

Tickets for the Saturday tour are $20 and include tours of the homes and the Tybee Lighthouse and lunch at the church.

Songwriter gives voice to range of emotions

PATTY Griffin's songs attract good singers, she says, which is why the Dixie Chicks, Linda Ronstadt and Solomon Burke are among the many who have covered her work.

Two of Australia's most successful songwriters, Kasey Chambers and Missy Higgins, were front and centre in the tightly packed Basement for the American roots performer's Australian debut: further indication of how much respect Griffin enjoys among her peers.

She has a wealth of great material to choose from, it's true, but to see the best of those songs performed live - and with minimal accompaniment - considerably magnifies their depth and emotional range. Her voice is the key. It is a rare and multifaceted thing, capable of tearing at your heart with its fragility one minute, then ripping your head off with a bluesy wail that seems at odds with her slender frame.

'We've got spirit, yes we do!'

SMITH CENTER -- Blankets of various colors and designs that were joined together like a giant quilt provided a picture of the fabric this community's made of.

On Friday afternoon, dozens of blankets were taped to the aluminum bleachers at Smith Center High School's football stadium, strategically placed to reserve seats for the state semifinal game set for Friday night.

"We put blankets on the bleachers on Wednesday, thinking that would be early enough," Dena Dannenberg said Friday afternoon while snipping hair at The Looking Glass, a beauty salon in downtown Smith Center.

But this week it wasn't early enough -- not to keep their traditional seats at the top of the stadium, anyway.

"We were in the middle this time, just because there were so many people up there already putting their blankets up there," said Dannenberg, whose nephew, Grady Godsey, plays for the three-time defending state champion Redmen.

Sod At Heinz Field To Get A Makeover

Heinz Field is getting a makeover, and a quick one, too.

The Steelers will put down a new grass playing field in time for Monday night's game against the Dolphins, but must wait until four Pittsburgh-area high school championship games on Friday and the South Florida-Pitt game on Saturday afternoon are played.

With intermittent rain forecast all week, the Steelers were concerned that the pounding their current field will take this weekend might create a poor playing surface on Monday.

"Our goal is to do everything in our power to provide the best possible conditions for both teams," Heinz Field director of management Jimmie Sacco said Wednesday in a statement. "After considering the number of high school, college and pro football games being played at Heinz Field in November, combined with the possibility of inclement weather, we believe this is the best way to go."

Running back Willie Parker complained of being unable to gain good footing during the Steelers' last home game, a 31-28 victory over Cleveland on Nov.
