Beating the odds on 'Survivor'

In early September, TIME magazine’s TV critic, James Poniewozik, published a list of the best 100 TV shows of all time. Among his choices was CBS’ “Survivor,” the show that debuted to huge ratings in 2000 and helped fuel the American craze for reality TV programming.

There are endless reality shows on TV today: the frequent CBS Emmy-winner “The Amazing Race,” in which players race on foot, by oxcart, pony, car, train and plane across the globe; the hugely popular singing competition “American Idol” on FOX; The CW’s “Beauty and the Geek.” The list goes on.

But there’s something about “Survivor” that sets it apart, said Poniewozik.

Cosmetic surgery industry attacked

BRITAIN'S cosmetic surgery industry has been accused of using hard sell tactics, illegal advertisements and pursuing profit over patient safety.

An investigation by a leading consumer organisation found that some clinics are flouting the law by allowing unqualified staff to prescribe the wrinkle treatment Botox, while others are not giving patients enough time to decide if they need surgery.

Disney pokes fun at its own tales with 'Enchanted'

"Enchanted"

HHH (out of four).

Directed by Kevin Lima. Starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Rachel Covey and Timothy Spall. Rated PG for some scary images and mild innuendo. Running time: 107 minutes.

Surely this was inevitable.

After years of watching the monstrously successful "Shrek" franchise parody everything beloved about those classic animated Disney movies, Disney is showing a sense of humor and making fun of itself.

"Enchanted" has a song in its heart and a tongue in its cheek — both in animated and live-action forms — with an infectious energy that helps overcome the script's contrivances.

Wide-eyed, would-be princess Giselle (the irresistible Amy Adams) is banished by the wicked Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon) from her idyllic cartoon playland to the harsh reality of Times Square before she can marry her one true love, Prince Edward (James Marsden).

Friends memorialize girl killed in ATV accident

The Jackson County, Fla. community has lost two of its youngest members in traffic crashes over the past few days, the latest taking the life of a 12-year-old Sneads girl. Jamie Messer died Sunday from injuries she received in an ATV accident just over the county line in Calhoun County Saturday afternoon. According to Florida Highway Patrol reports, Messer was a passenger on a 2007 Honda ATV being driven by 15-year-old Jeremy Leigh. According to reports, the ATV was eastbound on County Road 286 when Leigh slowed suddenly for a slower-moving ATV, lost control and applied the brake. The ATV flipped over, ejecting Leigh and Messer. Leigh, also of Sneads, was listed as having sustained serious injuries. Students at Grand Ridge Middle School on Monday filled a wall in their school with pictures and other remembrances of their fallen seventh-grade schoolmate.

Bias against hairstyles reveals a possible racial divide

A big-name law firm in New York recently invited a Glamour magazine staffer to talk to women lawyers about corporate fashion.

About 40 women, all employees of the international firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, showed up for the presentation, in which the Glamour junior staffer showed slides and pronounced which styles were fashion "dos" and which were fashion "don'ts."

Don Banks: Manning's mediocrity, questioning Gibbs, Jags, more

FOXBORO, Mass. - Musings, observations and the occasional insight on Week 12's storylines, as we await the latest Patriots-palooza of points at Gillette Stadium ...

• After 50 regular-season starts and just more than three full years of watching his every move, can we just all agree that Eli Manning is what he is? He's never going to be Peyton Manning; and by now, it's our fault if we don't realize where he fits into the pecking order of NFL quarterbacks.

He's a good, but far from great passer, who can still struggle mightily at times to see the field accurately and put the ball where his receivers -- as opposed to defenders -- can catch it.

Manning has never played worse than in the Giants' 41-17 homefield flameout against Minnesota on Sunday, which happened to occur in his 50th regular-season start since being selected first overall in 2004.
