Food pantries gear up for hunger season

Area food pantries are preparing for a long Wisconsin winter with heating costs on the rise. Food bank managers say they have a steady flow of visitors throughout the year, but there is usually an uptick in winter as bills mount up and money becomes tight.Mike Paoli, president of the Onalaska/Holmen Emergency Food Basket, said the food pantry serves an average of 200 families each month, but 230 used the resource in October. He expects even more in the coming winter as large families, pensioners, new arrivals, widows and people who are just down on their luck need a helping hand."They are right here in our neighborhoods and our towns. I think most people would be surprised by the amount of people that use these services," Paoli said. Most of the area pantries are currently supplied with nonparishable food, but paper products, diapers and health and beauty aides like shampoo and laundry detergent are always appreciated as those product are not covered by food stamps.Lori Laxton said the TLC Mission's food pantry has a variety of canned goods, but popular items like spaghetti, tuna fish and peanut butter never last long.
