Treasury of youth a state heritage

In the early 1850s talented Liverpudlian schoolboy John James Clark drew an exquisite map of his home town for a school project.

When John’s parents later emigrated to Australia he brought the drawing with him. Within months of arriving in Melbourne the boy’s canny father took the drawing to the fledgling Public Works Department, which employed the youngster on the spot. At just 14 years of age JJ Clark had begun his remarkable architectural career. By the age of 19, with little formal training he had designed the Treasury Building in Spring St – the first of many achievements. The life and works of the prolific, nomadic and "incredibly fastidious" JJ Clark emerge in a University of Melbourne PhD by Melbourne journalist and architectural history scholar Andrew Dodd, whose interest was first piqued by the beauty of the Treasury Building.


Love hunt two meet

TRUE romantic Patrick Moberg saw the girl of his dreams on a Manhattan subway and then lost her in a crush of commuters.

His ensuing hunt in a city of millions -- and via his website www.nygirlofmydreams.com -- captivated cynical New Yorkers and attracted worldwide attention.

The mystery girl turned out to be Australian beauty Camille Hayton, 22 -- from the Melbourne suburb of Kew -- who had moved to New York to become an actor.

And with the glare of America's media on them, the pair met this week for the first time.

"Only in America -- I just don't think it would happen anywhere else," Ms Hayton said after meeting Mr Moberg on Thursday.

The young Aussie said last week had begun as "really awful" when her home, a loft in SoHo, burned down on Halloween.

Black Friday Traffic to Online Shopping Sites Grows 10 Percent Year Over Year, According to Nielsen Online Holiday ...

Nielsen Online, a service of The Nielsen Company, reported today that at home Web traffic to the Holiday eShopping Index grew 10 percent year over year on Black Friday, garnering 21.2 million unique visitors across more than 120 representative online retailers, compared with 19.2 million unique visitors last year. This growth is similar to last year's, when the Index saw 12 percent year-over-year growth on the day after Thanksgiving.

Consumer Electronics was the fastest growing product category week over week on Friday, increasing 235 percent from November 16th to November 23rd (see Table 1). Computer Hardware/Software took the No. 2 spot with 121 percent Web traffic growth, followed by Shopping Comparison/Portals with 95 percent growth.

Oy! The strike! It's so bizarre that I'm in one of the few shows running. It's not like I chose to do The Ritz because I knew it would be immune from the strike, it just arbitrarily worked out that way.

This week began with a benefit for Only Make Believe, a great organization founded by Dena Hammerstein (Jamie's widow) that brings theatre to hospitalized children. It was great to see Julia Murney again, fresh off of Wicked.
