AnnTaylor Launches New Fragrance Line

Women's clothing store chain AnnTaylor Stores Corp. on Monday announced the nationwide launch of a new line of fragrances and body care products.

The new collection, titled Possibilities, is part of the company's plan to expand its offerings in the beauty category.

Supermodel Petra Nemcova will serve as spokeswoman for the product line.

Shares of AnnTaylor Stores rose 63 cents, or 2 percent, Monday to $31.16.

UPDATE: Avon Products Profit Jumps 61%, Beating Estimates

NEW YORK (Dow Jones) -- Avon Products Inc., the largest direct seller of beauty products, said third-quarter profit surged 61%, exceeding estimates, boosted by increased fragrance and color cosmetics sales.

Net income rose to $139.1 million, or 32 cents a share, from $86.4 million, or 19 cents, a year earlier, the New York-based company (AVP) said. Total revenue also rose a better than expected 14% to $2.35 billion.

Fragrance sales jumped 23%, leading a double-digit gain in beauty product demand. Avon boosted advertising spending 44% to plug new products including the flagship brand's color cosmetics. It's also pushing sales in emerging markets such as Latin America and China and has increased recruitment advertising and representative training.

Analysts, on average, expected the cosmetics giant to post a profit of 31 cents a share on revenue of $2.27 billion, according to Thomson Financial.

Starwatch Consumer: Retail trade group predicts slower sales of gift cards

The National Retail Federation, a retail trade group, predicts that sales of gift cards will rise a sober 6 percent this holiday season, to $26.3 billion.
