Program's relevance increases this year

This year's Share Your Christmas program may be more important than ever, said Pam Copling, who coordinates the program that gives News-Leader readers an opportunity to make Christmas merrier for needy families in Greene County.

"It's a good year to give," said Copling, who is also director of the Holiday Center, where several holiday assistance programs are managed. She is also executive director of Crosslines, an outreach of the Council of Churches of the Ozarks that provides emergency assistance to families in need all year.

More than a century of good deeds

Got milk? Got transit? Got a groundbreaking moral stance against fascism? Got a daughter finally able to sit at her dying mom's bedside and hold her hand?

Got fearlessness? Got truth?

Got a happy ending?

The Star has hundreds of them. Since its first edition hit the streets 115 years ago, the paper has fought to find a silver lining behind even the darkest thundercloud.

Front and centre have always been the Fresh Air Fund, set up in 1901, during the worst heatwave on record, to send inner-city kids to summer camp; and the Santa Claus Fund, established five years later to bring Christmas cheer to needy families. Both funds are still going strong, still filling a deeply felt need.

It was the Star's Pure Milk Fund, set up in 1909, that helped ensure – as an editorial at the time said – "a supply of pure, healthy milk...

Male teens at greater risk of developing eating disorders

Washington, Nov 20 (ANI): A new study has shed light on the prevalence of eating disorders amongst adolescents of various ethnic groups by finding that male adolescents are at an increased risk of developing eating disorder symptoms.

The research also found that black females are least likely to practice weight control.

The study, one of the first to examine trends in adolescent weight control behaviours over a 10-year period, found that the incidence of these behaviours in male adolescents significantly increased, while black females appear to resist pressure to pursue thinness.

Led by Y. May Chao of Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, researchers examined data from nationally representative samples of high school students from 1995 to 2005. The data was available via the Youth Risk Behaviour Surveillance System (YRBSS), a survey conducted every two years since 1991 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assess the prevalence of health-risk behaviours among teens.

Made for luxurious living

WHAT does your hairbrush or your shaver say about you? Well, plenty it seems.

The Acca Kappa catalogue for its mens collection reveals, It is ones minor objects that are often the most revealing indicators of ones way of being, and of looking at life. Just as clean nails are a sign of well being and politeness.

That one statement pretty much sums up the gentility of the Italian luxury bath and beauty brand that has recently made its way to Kuala Lumpur. Founded in Treviso, Italy, it is a family owned business that prides itself on making luxurious products for everyday use.
