ENCHANTED: Disney sendup is destined to be a classic

Enchanted, the best Disney fantasy-musical since Mary Poppins, is a hilarious, dazzling sendup of the thing that made Disney what it is today: fairy-tale princesses.

It features a delightful, wide-eyed comic performance by Amy Adams of Junebug and another singing, dancing, scene-stealing turn by James Marsden (Hairspray). This blend of animation in the classic Disney (hand-drawn) style and live-action modern romance has wit and charm to burn.

We begin as we always do, "once upon a time," in an animated fairy-tale land called Andalasia. That's where Giselle (Adams), equal parts Snow White, Cinderella, Belle and Ariel, sings her heart out waiting for her "true love's kiss." Her singing is so sweet that the forest critters come at her call, helping around the house.

City Wise 11-14-2007

Hawaii Pacific University, the Fort Street Mall Business Improvement District and the Honolulu Art and Culture District are sponsoring a night on the mall tonight.

Following the lead of the city-sponsored Sunset on the Beach, the three groups are facilitating an open-air film event thatll turn the normally empty-after-dark mall into a veritable street fair, complete with live music, food and of course, a featured film.

The event takes on a Chinese theme with the screening of Shaolin Soccer, a 2001 comedy directed by Stephen Chow in which a band of retired Shaolin monks put their skills to good use playing soccer.
