Namibia: Marichen Will Make Namibia Proud

Miss Namibia, Marichen Luiperth, is currently in Sanya, People's Republic of China to prepare for the 2007 Miss World beauty pageant on December 1.

Luiperth left for China at the beginning November and according to her sister Brigitte, Marichen feels the competition is quite tough but that the final product will give the crowd its money's worth. "She said the competition is of a quite high standard, but says she will give it her best shot and make Namibia proud. She also had a cold, but now she feels much better now."

Gifts That Don't Kill

The conscientious consumer (which we like to think of as an ideal and not an oxymoron) can find herself beset by angst each time she steps out the door. Is this bauble/tchotchke/food item fair trade/local/sustainable? Or was it made by underfed 9-year-olds out of rare tropical hardwood and then safety-tested on unsuspecting bunnies? Heightened national awareness of climate change—which, don't get us wrong, is a very good thing—has dramatically complicated this calculus, introducing factors like shipping miles and carbon footprints. Ditto the rash of lead-related toy recalls. It's enough to drive a neurotic do-gooder into Scrooge-like, housebound, unholidayesque isolation for the duration of the season.Just in time for the biggest shopping day of the year, we're here to remind you to (a) breathe in; (b) breathe out; (c) consider that diving under the covers for the next month is not necessary.

Come hear the ``bear" facts

The Chewonki Foundation will present its program entitled, "Bears of North America: Beauty or Beauty or Beast" on Monday, Dec. 3.

Both respected and feared by humans, bears are some of the largest land mammal predators in the world. References to bears are found in mythology, Native American legends, children's stories and cartoons. Unfortunately, bears are commonly portrayed as snarling beasts and villains.

In "Bears of North America," Chewonki's Assistant Director of Outreach Programs, Kelly Martin, will allay some of these misapprehensions. Via slides and a skeleton, Martin will help students understand more about the three bear species found in North America: Black, Grizzly, and Polar bears. The program will focus most closely on Maine's native Black Bear, possibly the most misunderstood of all of the species.

A Taylor Twofer: Ann Coulter and Al Franken

With a nod to this past weekend's Grateful Dead Symposium and the looming 2008 primary season, we draw together two interviews from Taylor Hill that draw together both topics...

"Deadheads Are What Liberals Claim to Be But Aren't": An Interview with Ann Coulter

When I called the Clare Booth Luce Policy Institute, whose chairwoman gives speeches on topics with titles like "The Failures of Feminism", and told the gatekeeper there that I wanted to do an interview with Ann Coulter solely about the Grateful Dead, there was a small pause. Then she recovered and politely told me to send her an e-mail, which she would forward to Ann. That, I expected, would be the end of it.

When I got home that night, and saw an e-mail in my box from Ann Coulter, I thought "how polite of her to send a rejection letter rather than simply ignoring my proposal." Instead, I found that she had somehow written "I'd love to! Good website!" While she was delayed by a round of speeches to make up due to strep throat, and other events life throws out, we kept shooting e-mails back and forth and I discovered a secret that I will reveal despite the damage to her reputation that it may cause: Ann is really cool and really funny.

New Oxford house tour features new stops

Think house party.

Now think 500-plus people.

Finally, think Christmas decorations, caroling and lots of holiday spirit.

Put all of those together and you've got New Oxford's Holiday House Walking Tour.

This year's tour will feature 11 historic homes and buildings all within walking distance of New Oxford's Center Square.

Anyone interested in learning the history and seeing the interior of the structures are more than welcome to join the tour for a price of only $10 in advance, said tour chairwoman Karen Millar.

Last year, the tour attracted about 550 people, Millar said.

"We're hoping to have more than that (this year)," she said.

Part of the tour this year will be the former site of the New Oxford Fire Co. No. 1 at 111 W. High St., which dates back to 1887.

Fashion's Different Look

CUMMING, Georgia, NOV. 26, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The director of a new modeling group says that some girls have been finding it hard to spend hours at the shopping mall. Their problem? Clothes offered by retailers do not meet the youths' standards of modesty. Brenda Sharman, director of Pure Fashion, explains in this interview with ZENIT that her group began when would-be shoppers could not find anything that was "pretty but not provocative."Q: How did Pure Fashion begin and how does it work?Sharman: Pure Fashion shows began in 1999, when several girls across the country decided to present modesty fashion shows to counteract the immodest fashions that were beginning to permeate local retailers. These moms and daughters were looking for ways to dress modestly, yet fashionably.Word spread over the next five or six years through Challenge Clubs -- a Regnum Christi youth apostolate for girls ages 10-16 -- and modesty fashion shows began popping up all over the country.

Stolen Insulin Could Pose Major Health Risk on Black Market

PLAINFIELD, Ind. - Indiana State Police are looking for some stolen cargo that could be dangerous in the wrong hands.

In the dark, early Thursday morning, thieves took two trailers from Daum Trucking in Plainfield. They backed up a couple of trucks and hauled them away.

Inside the trailers were health and beauty products, but a lot of medicine too. Specifically, insulin that needs to stay refrigerated. Perhaps headed to the black market.

Sgt. Rich Myers of the Indiana State Police said the thieves must have known what was in the trailers. Myers also says that by not maintaining the medicine properly, the thieves could be selling a toxic product.

"If this insulin is not maintained at a proper temperature, it can go bad, and if someone does take this insulin it can cause very bad sickness and even death."

Trucker Ronnie Williams says onboard computers keep drivers informed of thefts like these.
