Historic Delta Queen's Future In Doubt

LITTLE ROCK -- The uniqueness that has made the 81-year-old Delta Queen a tourist attraction on various rivers, including the Arkansas, could leave those river travelers and the cities they visit high and dry."It would be a shame if the Delta Queen is retired," said Lee Powell, executive director of the Mississippi Delta Grassroots Caucus."The Delta Queen has a substantial economic impact on Delta towns where it stops," said Rex Nelson, co-chairman of the Delta Regional Authority.Earlier this year, U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., cited safety reasons when he refused to exempt the steam-powered paddleboat for a 10th time from 1966 legislation known as the Safety of Life at Sea Act.The act prohibits wooden boats from carrying more than 50 overnight passengers. The Delta Queen carries up to 174.In response to the decision by the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, 1st District Rep.

Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble: "Make music, not war"

The Virginia Arts Festival presents Yo-Yo Ma and the "Silk Road Ensemble," in concert at Chrysler Hall, Feb. 25.

"Make music, not war" was easily the idealized subtext of the eagerly anticipated appearance of celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma and his "Silk Road Ensemble," performing as a prelude to the April opening of the Virginia Arts Festival's 10th season.

Ma formed the Silk Road Project in 1998 "...to promote collaboration and a sense of community among institutions, artists, and audiences who share a fascination with the transcultural artistic organization symbolized by the ancient Silk Road" which, some 2100 years ago, extended from Japan and China across Central Asia to India, Iran, and the regions associated with the Mediterranean Sea.

Documentary highlights Navajo pageant, traditional values

ALBUQUERQUE When young women head off to compete in the weeklong Miss Navajo Nation pageant, they bring along their evening gowns, jewelry, high heels, public speaking skills and their butcher knives.

This is no ordinary pageant.

On the nation's largest Indian reservation where tradition reigns, contestants are required to speak their native language, make fry bread and butcher an animal that represents life to the Navajos sheep.

"The pageant really gets people's interest because they say, 'Oh my gosh, a pageant where you butcher sheep.' That's really the grabber," said Billy Luther, a documentary film maker. "But I think people walk away learning the Navajo way of life and how much the Navajo people respect women."

Luther, whose mother was crowned Miss Navajo in 1966, offers a different take on what it means to be beautiful in his first feature-length documentary, "Miss Navajo," which airs Tuesday on PBS's Independent Lens.

PICTURE this: A low sun shining weakly through rain-sodden clouds, and the sulphurous smell of coal smoke from a thousand chimneys as the fumes drift slowly, grudgingly, apologetically, over the roofs of a south Manchester suburb.

Sparrows huddled in leaf-barren trees, too tired and apathetic to raise a cheep as the beady-eyed pigeons patrolled the pavement on the look-out for the smallest crumb to eat.

A horse standing sleepily between the shafts of the coalman's cart. Iron scales, dust, empty hessian bags neatly folded amidst full bags of coal, nutty slack and coke. The horse peers through leather blinkers, as his master appears, from a gateway, grimy and black.

He throws his empty bag onto the cart and looking up at his mate's dust-streaked face turns his leather-clad back and accepts another heavy bag of coal and walks a bow legged walk to deliver its contents into the hole above the cellar.
